As an aside I have several (ahem) versions of the ZX81 manual - issue one spiral bound has over 200 pages and the latest perfect bound one I have has only 160 or so pages!
That could be what I was half remembering about Sinclair cutting out the blank pages...(see above).

Sinclair manuals

A two minute search in my bookcase has so far found six ZX81 manuals and four ZX Spectrum 16k/48k manuals... (and that's not including me going near any storage boxes!)

ZX81 manuals:

First edition, © 1980. Has a black ring binder and 212 pages. Printed at The Leagrave Press Limited, Luton & London. Sinclair' address at this time was 6 King's Parade.

Second edition 1981, © 1980. Has a black ring binder and 212 pages. Printed at The Leagrave Press Limited, Luton & London. Sinclair' address at this time was 6 King's Parade.

Missing the first sheet :-(. Has a black ring binder and 212 pages. Printed at The Leagrave Press Limited, Luton & London. Sinclair' address at this time was 6 King's Parade.

Second edition 1981, reprinted 1982. © 1980. Perfect bound (glued spine). 212 pages. Printed at The Leagrave Press Limited, Luton & London. Sinclair' address at this time was 25 Willis Road.

ZX Spectrum 16k/48k manuals:

First edition 1982, © 1982. Has a black ring binder and 232 pages. Printed by The Leagrave Press Ltd, Luton and London. Sinclair' address at this time was 6 King's Parade.

Third edition 1983, © 1982. Has a white ring binder and 192 pages. Printed by Richard Clay Ltd. Suffolk. Sinclair' address at this time was 25 Willis Road. (This is the one that came with our first ZX Spectrum).

Third edition 1983, © 1982. Has a white ring binder and 192 pages. Printed by Richard Clay Ltd. Suffolk. Sinclair' address at this time was 25 Willis Road. (Better condition than the one above).

Third edition 1983, © 1982. Has a white ring binder and 192 pages. Printed by Forsyth Middleton & Co. Ltd. Kilsyth, Scotland. Sinclair' address at this time was 25 Willis Road.

Note the front cover illustrations on both the ZX81 and the ZX Spectrum manuals are by John Harris of Young Artists.

My speccy manual is third edition no ring binding, so as you have the full set, mark it's probably best if you could help Charles out as mine doesn't seem to line up with his chapter headings and to be honest after looking at the pics posted I'm not really sure whats needed.

I have in front of me:-

ZX81 Second Edition, black ring binder from Leagrave Press with 212 pages. Sinclair address is King’s Parade.

Spectrum Third Edition with black ring binder from Burlington Press with 192 pages. Sinclair address is Willis Road.

I will have a look through my others at some point.

Just the missing SYSTEM VARIABLES/ USING MACHINE CODE AND APPENDIX CHARACTER TABLE could probable come from any of the printed manuals regardless of the page numbers.

Story of my life. Looking one direction the clock spins behind me, then stops when I look at it. Then does it again.

Attached should be the zip file containing pages 171 to 189 from the first edition of the ZX Spectrum BASIC programming manual. Note that this version has some errors in it. Also, this copy has some hand written amendments and notes / marks.
