No, they're just slightly different. YM is Japanese version (licence) of American AY chip.

Uh... i would have thought a single 7474 or similar ( anything that can do divide by 2) would suffice, think you would leave pin 26 hanging out of the socket, and pin 22 (clock input) would have to go to the new clock divider.

For those of us with an enhanced ULA i could alter the code to produce a 1.625Mhz clock out then we wouldn't even need an extra clock divider chip ;-)

I would say the the YM is sonically better than the old AY, perhaps the analogue side of its D/A converter is superior to the AYs'?

I was thinking of the PIC so the chip could get the exact frequency it needed. Of course a '74 would do...

I hope it's not too big offtopic, but still - there was a "brother" of SoundTracker.
And ZX_Bruno still asks about the problem related with it. ;)

SoundTracker looked like this:

However later appeared the second program: Sample-Tracker.

The SampleTracker for Spectrum 48K and AY-interface sounds like this:

The prog is here: http://zxspectrum48.i-demo.pl/samtrack.zip

Bruno was asking if it's possible to port those procedures into a ZX81 with 48Kb of RAM.
I have to admit - I have no idea. Maybe with FAST MODE?
Hm.

Well, just askin'...

Possible? maybe. Can i do it? Maybe. Will i do it? Unliklely.

playing back real samples will of course require the CPU's power at all times during playback, So FAST mode is the only way that would be possible, Memory Could also be an issue.

Me thinks i'll pass this challenge.

it is kinda cool that 'real' samples can be payed, but for me personally i'm not keen on the grainy sound.

Anyway guys, if You look for music for Your program, then let me know. ;)
(Still the song takes 4,5Kb minimum).

Hi Yerzmyey
I am not looking for music for programs, but for good music for me, played by my Zeddy ;)
There are a lot of good songs at zxtunes.com, but I could not find some of my favorite songs there:
e. g.
"Stairways to heaven " by Led Zeddelin
or
"Am Fenster" by City: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xto_-U3v940
or
"Child in Time" by Deep Purple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oovbKFWf9qU

Maybe those songs are too long for a Zeddy ram?

Aaaah, the long songs.
That's not a problem of RAM actually, that's a problem of SoundTracker's construction.
It's rather impossible to make resonable (not boring) 9-10 minutes songs, because there is only 31 available patterns. :)
The longest song I made was about 7 minutes and after all it was dangerously close to boring. ;)
