as stated above ZXvid is overkill, besides i'm not 100% sure it will work becuase TS1500 already has backporch.

There are many silicon transistors (which are used as both signal amplifiers and digital electronic switches) that will do the job.
NPN is a type of transistor (but not a part number), transistors are available in a number of different types.
Why do I need to know where you are? Well transistor numbering fall into four broad groups, American, European, Japanese and manufacturer specific.
If you are in, or can get American transistors, then we can suggest an American transistor.
The BC548 transistor is an European design.
Before I waffle on even further, can you solder?

If memory serves I seem to remember that when He ran the old TS1000 forum it was mentioned That He was in New York.
Perhaps Sir Morris remembers better than I do.
As for the mod I just used the transistors from a knackered speccy they work well enough.

Moggy

Possible transistors include

BC547B, BC547C
BC548B, BC548C
BC549B, BC549C

2N3904 should also be okay ( a very common transistor) and even available from http://www.radioshack.com (as well as many other suppliers)

http://www.digikey.com stock a good range

Some transistor information

Pinout for 2N3904 here: http://www.reprise.com/host/circuits/tr ... inouts.asp
Notice that the pinouts are not the same, but both will fit in the same holes on a circuit board 8-)
Other transistor pinouts: http://hamradio.lakki.iki.fi/new/Datash ... r_pinouts/
A very detailed, but overly complex description is on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_ju ... transistor Don't worry about understanding most of this, you don't need to understand how they work.

I'm torn between trying to fix this myself or sending my 1500 over the pond to get modified. The video out jack is brittle as it is, so I may go with the second option. May have to wait a month though - wife is irritated I've been spending so much on Sinclair stuff recently :D
