Several ZX81 for sale on eBay, including 50hz UK and 60hz USA/Canada machines: Many Timex-branded ZX81s (for use with 60hz television) Some already have a "comp mod". These I suppose will work in any country along with a composite video monitor and a suitable 9V DC power supply

69 GBP buy-it-now Gorgeous Condition Sinclair ZX81 Refurbished + 16k Upgrade + Comp Mod Fully Working

what is the 15-pin connector on the side for? Is it possible that's for a composite monitor and the TV signal still works?

It has the final revision 649 ROM and the early ULA 2C184E bit with the comp mod that's irrelevant

I had a Zeddy with an identical socket on the side which in my case was used to connect to an external keyboard sold by Maplin, so would have thought this was for something similar.

eBay: Sinclair ZX81 Computer Lot: Bits and pieces, w/keyboard, manuals, circuit boards out of Minneapolis USA current bid $31 USD

genuine ZX81 USA model

This one is tugging at me, but only for nostalgia reasons. Back in 82 my kit came with that exact issue of Sync, an issue of Syntax ZX80, and that yellow Nanos reference card. I even had a Maxell tape like that at one point

Looks to be kit-assembled judging by the unevenness of the soldering

Consider the exposed AC transformer to be "parts", and instead use the included wall adapter
