Some interesting points there Mark.

You mention Sinclair putting together bits and bobs to get rid of old stock and I'm inclined to agree because for all the professionalism Sinclair tried to exude as a corporation there were times when they looked to be running it like a "Mom and Pop" corner store.

As for the grommets or push rivets it may be a case of the ones fitted in the UK were a metric size whereas I believe in the states you were using imperial sizes hence the difference if they were sourced locally.
Some spares in including the rivets are still available from this excellent site. (run by this forums owner).....

As for Mr Searle I believe he left Sinclair after the take over by Amstrad.
