I'm not sure if there is any, "mapping emulation," which maps joystick movements to keyboard presses. If there is, then it would make it backwards compatible with everything.
The spand+ has only been around since 2017, the original or classic spand since 2011 from an idea first mooted by Sir Morris in 2007.

The original issues 1 and 3 were different beasts to the spand+ and had breakout pads on the board for joystick use. an add on board for the AY and joystick port came later.

Re Key mapping, this taken form the spand+ manual...

"" CONFIG J=udlrf" Controls which keys are to be emulated by the joystick when using INKEY$. See notes below.

INKEY$ can be used to detect the 4 ordinal directions of an attached joystick. No diagonals are usable at this time. The default joystick codes are 6, 7, 5, 8 and 0 which map to the cursor directions."
