I've recorded what I've learned

Post by msknight »

All that I'm learning from the kind people on this forum, and in a few other places, I've put on my web site. Hopefully it will cut down on the repeat comments in the forum from newbies like me, continuing to ask the same questions, time after time :-)

In my BBC Micro section, about half way down, are the entries for the ZX81...
https://msknight.com/bbc/

Yet unfinished is the ROM section, as I have queries with a few suppliers about a 100 year EEPROM and if that fails then I have to query about EPROM programming... but that will likely be a few weeks away yet. I have also to add a few more pictures in the opening the zeddy section. I will also be re-reading what I've written (as I do) and possibly tighten some of my loose explanations as time goes on.

If anyone spots any errors, things I should add or credits and quotes that I've missed, please do let me know. I have another zeddy here to go through (which I am intending to put in a pine case which I hope to resemble the sloping C64) so there will no doubt be more experience taking that apart, to add to the troubleshooting section.

There are a few more pictures of the first zeddy in the first case, in the mechanical keyboard section.

That's a good resource you've gathered. Maybe you should add a link to it in your signature. You can simply add a signature to all your post in you profile here at the forum. This would make it easy for us to find the link, because we just need to find one of your posts.

Just reading through - great stuff!

A couple of points about 550 ROMs:

They are not as rare as you might think. I know I have bought a lot of zeddies but I have had quite a few of these.

Spotters guide to zeddies likely to have one:

Soft spongy feet, not hard rubber.
Comes with a ZX80 black PSU.
Comes with the ZX80 type cassette cables (I will find a photo).
Comes with a First Edition manual.
You can see a kludge fix board inside the zeddy (an extra chip on a board on the Z80).

Its also worth noting (if you have not done so elswhere) that the Wespi fast loader software does not work with the 550.

You can fit a ZX8-CCB very neatly and easily on the underside of the ZX81 motherboard if you don’t want to gut the modulator. It fits nicely in the standard case:
