Where can I find a 5 pin din to twin Jack plug

Post by Lostboys »

Hi
Anyone know where I can get a 5 pin din to twin Jack plug, as my York cassette player is 5 pin din and I would like to use it for my ZX81.

Ready made 5 Pin 180° DIN to two 3.5mm Mono Jack Leads are now very hard to find. But the parts are easily available, so it’s possible to make one up.

Hi
Didn’t think it would be that difficult to find a pre made lead, images of cassette player I bought didn’t show the side with connections.
Maybe worth just picking up another cassette deck.

It seems to be well known cable.

However this is from DIN to stereo mini jack. You will then need a cable from stereo mini jack to two mono mini jack.

I think a cassette player with the correct sockets on the side might be the easiest option, as I have a few different vintage computers.

Or you could buy a 5 Pin 180° DIN to 4 x RCA (phono) male plugs audio cable like this one, then use two 3.5mm mono jack plug to rca phono female socket adaptors, such as these.

You will have to work out which two RCA/phono plugs are the correct ones, two will be outputs (if the tape deck links the left and right channel pins) and two will be inputs. By convention, DIN pin 1 is audio in (Mic) and pin 3 is audio out (Ear).

Even if you have the DIN connector connected to a ZX81: the voltage levels at the DIN connector are much too low to be recognized by the ZX81 input circuit (DIN connectors use low levels and expect high impedance inputs, the ZX81 inputs are low impedance).

Yeah, you may need an amplifier. E.g. something like this.
