Thanks again - I'm going to hold off doing anything more with the tape loading stuff until I get hold of a proper old school tape deck to take any issues with the phone / file out of the equation.

Just wanted to update this thread.

Finally got hold of a tape deck and some blank cassettes and happy to report that loading and saving works fine to tape, so can put down the original issues to some incompatibilities with the devices I was using previously.

Thanks for reporting back with your findings :D

I’m glad that loading from tape is working for you.

A lot of modern audio devices don’t produce sufficient volume (voltage) for a ZX81. The ZX81 (like the ZX80 and the ZX Spectrum) were designed to work with the shoe box mono type tape recorders. Hence they have circuits that heavy attenuate the input (Ear) signal. If you want to use a modern audio device, you will need to amplify the signal before feeding it to your Zeddy.
