What purpose was planed to use it ?
I'd never seen anything use it until your picture :D
With that RAM pack it looks like a way to stabilize and keep the dreaded "wobble" from happening.

I'll have to keep that in mind. :)

Thank you for pointing out that design element!

Is this a solid model? Is it an usable one possible by 3D printing?
I mean one were you can put a board inside?

Yes, it's a solid model.
To do pretty key ring, a plat cup-cake, a door calle or a new module for ISS.
But, you had to cut a big hole in it… to enclose a Zx81 mother card.

I've added a more accurate model to thingiverse.
See my previous link in this thread.

Although I found a few adjustments (model needs to be scaled up by 102%, slight adjustment to the profile) so I need to upload a v2 with those fixes.

I might also add the port holes, split it and make it hollow.
Those would be a v3 if it would be useful.

I needed an accurate model so I could print an enclosure.

These are test prints for fit.
Next I'll extend the back for a battery, charging board, and 7" LCD mount (zx81 laptop :D)

I'll add the "laptop" case when I'm done

V2 of the zx81 case model is up.

I fixed some scaling on the block and added the sound/power port to the block.

But the real improvement was to make a fully 3d printable version in 2 halves (top and bottom). This includes all ports, key holes, risers, screw holes, etc.

It's not as pretty as the original. A few more sharp edges.
But, It should work with a zx81, Ts1000, or compatible minstrel.

If there are any tweaks that need to be made let me know.

There are 2 variants of the the case for 2 different locations of the TV connector: in Europe the connector is closer the the MIC/EAR/POWER sockets than in America:

I don't have one of those cases.
If someone could tell me the offsets in mm I could make an stl for that version
