me wonders if this particular ZXpand+ is one that snuck out without that smoothing capacitor ?

I don't know. Where is that capacitor on the board ?

Should be a capacitor near to the regulators I only mention it as my board was missing it, and it exhibited some strange behaviour and worst of all serial comms didn't work properly because of it.

Could you please post a photo of the area with the capacitor that was missing?

I don't own a diamond but I have some squares for comparison
