Now that makes perfect sense Mark and come to think of it I've seen old arcade boards go like this.

That certainly makes sense. I've seen it a lot on various chips and systems too, I often see it with the 4116 lower RAM chips on the Spectrum for example.

Well, I went ahead this morning and desoldered the suspect Z80. I installed a socket and popped in a known working NEC compatible Z80 and the '81 now starts up to the K. I'll need to add a composite video circuit to test everything fully next week however as I can't get a stable picture with this old ULA and RF output to see what I'm doing.
