It's not a problem, I don't think. It's more of a personal preference.
Is your board intended to be mounted outside of the '81 case or will it fit inside in place of, say, the modulator?

This has not been a part of my consideration. I plan to have a custom case for my ZX81, with custom keyboard. As I don't think the original keyboard and case are very useful.

I currently use the non-video version of Wespi, and created this version of the PCB to try the video version of the Wespi.

Just a minor addition.

I just reconfirmed that WESPI doesnt work with an OS Rom v550
You put in the 649 version and it works.

Martin - I look forward to hearing about how the video works out. I thought about going that route, but since I have an RGBtoHDMI already for my Beeb, I ended up feeding the signal into that.

Its super sharp, but due to the price of an RGBtoHDMI, I wouldn't recommend this approach.
(But if you had a RGBtoHDMI already, or wanted one for other computers that you have...)

So I finally got to assemble the Wespi pcb I ordered. So why are there so many wires? Because I used the wrong footprint for the ESP32-Wroom board.

I've flashed the firmware, and get a white screen, when no ZX81 is connected.

However when I connect the ZX81 video signal, I get big pixels in black and white, changing rapidly.

Yeah, I must have done something wrong. But the diagnostics will go on another evening.

Is there any way I can get my grubby hands on two of those PCBs or the files to have them made? They look really great and if left to my own devices it's going to be proto board to build this (and that away looks ugly!) Happy to have them made myself if that is an option.
