I tried a couple of Composite to HDMI converters. On my computer monitor not one created a visible image from a modded ZX81 or a modded ZX Spectrum. Even the RGB to Scart cable from my Spectrum 128K didn't give a proper image. On my flatscreen television I could put the composite signal into the AV input and that was OK. The same signal converted to HDMI into the HDMI input was very bad. Sometimes it was shifted for 1/3rd fo it was way too black.
Now I have a small monitor that had both HDMI and AV input and that works very well for my modded Spectrum and ZX81.
