Actually these inline switches are supplied with screws. You only need a knife to cut the lead (that is not in the plug ) and screw the switch to the lead, close it's case with two screws and that's it. I know two types:
One type where you cut both lines and screw them together inside the switch
and a cheaper version where you only cut one line and the second has to remain untouched. Then you will have to shorten the cut line about the length of the swich itself....
No heat neccessary. Have a look at cheap reading lamps...
