30 years of ZX81 - a NEW COMPO??

Post by yerzmyey »

Hi guys.

As You know, I organized two ZX81 contest within the years.
http://zx81.republika.pl/
GRAPHIC COMPETITION 2007 and DEMO COMPETITION 2009.

Time passed and we have 2011. And - like Factor6 noticed in a letter to me - it's also 30th anniversary of ZX81 appearance.
I could organize some new ZX81 on-line contest, however I don't actually know in what category.
As DEMO COMPETITION was related with ZX81 1K only, so what comes to my mind is
"DEMO COMPETITION for ZX81 16K".

What do You think? And maybe You have other suggestions?
Of course the best would be "16K GAME COMPO" or at least "1K GAME COMPO" but I'm not sure if games are so easy to do, that people would write them for contest (rather for their own pleasure, I presume).

OK, any thoughts????????????????????????????????????

Best wishes to all,
Yerz

Hello Yerz,

there is a distinct difference between a 1K game and a 1K RAM game.
Storing a game in 1K and using 16K of memory is much easier than a full game in 1K RAM.

My tribute this year will be some 1k Hiresgames in 1K RAM.
I am already working on another approach of the limited screendata on a full screen.

Thanx man, the info is important. I noticed it during 2009 1K demo compo. Also problems with videro-ram and so on. :)
And - like You said - the demos had to work on original 1K ZX81 machines. :)

Well, so we have the first proposition and possible the first game (hahhaha). :)

Anybody else would like to make a game for the compo, for original ZX81 without any extensions?

A 16K Sound Game Compo (supporting ZONX-81)?

Theoretically - yes, but whereas still not a lot of people have it, and still there is no real emulation of it, there would be small bunch of guyz to hear and vote. :(

AFAIK Sirmorris has fixed the ZONX emulation on EO ;)
What is the State? Can it be released?
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

It is already released - in the 'eo + zxpand' thread.

It's still not perfect - there are times when the sound breaks up. I suspect the bug with the coarse tuning was introduced during debugging of this issue.

I also thing what is more possible that people would do as a "fast job for a compo" in their spare time -
1K game for stock ZX81
or
16K game with AY sound.

I would like to see ports of 128K Spectrum demos on the ZX81 with AY sound. You know it is possible. Some high-res demos on YouTube are already incredibly impressing and the only thing they're missing is sound. If a full port isn't possible or recommended, new demos with AY sound (and high-rest) should appear.

A few more ideas:

-Best ZX81 AY tune

-Demos using sampled speech - This is an undocumented feature of the AY. The Spectrum gets away with it by using all the cpu. I don't know if the ZX81's CPU is fast enough to do something like this. But if Gasman was able to have AY music AND sampled speech running at the same time on a 3.5Mhz cpu, the Zeddy should be able to do something impressive as well.

-Demos with digitised video playback. I've seen digitised video being played from audio cassettes (!) on a very small window. Don't tell me the ZXPand can't do it by reading data from the memory card.

-Game compo with 16K and AY sound but with a theme (or more than one) that could change each year. Example of a theme: Games with space ships.

Simple games can be addictive and fun, yes, but in the past few years we've seen lots and lots of puzzle games. Telling people what type of game they should be coding for a Compo might help revive a genre that hasn't been used or explored in a long time.
