UDG - Just UDG...

Hi,

Is there a simple way to get UDG? HRG is super cool and all, but really, if I could just redefine a handful of characters I'd be happy. I found a really cool UDG designer by Andy Rea, but not sure how to use the output. Any way to do that with just software? My "Dream" would be some code to enable it, and a copy of the stock CHR set that is copied to a spot where I can modify it. I'd just prepend that ASM code to my existing games.

UDG requires special hardware. You could use WRX instead with most memory expansions with a small mod and draw anything you want though.

If you have WRX support, “drbeep” has made software to simulate UDG from Basic.

If you can limit yourself to 25 UDG chars, then you can use USCII with WRX hardware.

As far as I know you do need the hard ware mentioned earlier in the thread.
I've converted a number a games for UDG using Andy's designer (which only works on the ZXpand+)and my method of use is to have a short program with a piece of code which sets the I register,(I think as I'm not the most technically minded) loads the block saved by the designer then the game it self.

The attached zip file might give you some further ideas.

Xpand users with Mr Rea's UDG board set it for 128.

Eighty one users.

Eighty One set for CHRs16,ZXpand and no high res.

SZ-81 set for UDG no WRX . ( The most up to date version of SZ-81 has ZXpand support.)

All three files in the same folder in all cases.

Load "FUNREM.P" Then run and it will do the rest

Thanks for the replies! Moggy, I'd definitely get ZXpand if I could. In eightyone, I didn't see any setting for chrs16, only 128. will try that and check out the other tips. Martin, 25 Chrs is plenty, I'll def. look into that - thanks!

It may have changed over time as when I did the game it was CHR$ 16 but no doubt they amount to one and the same but will stand corrected if in error.

I thought the Memotech was only hi-res not UDG.

Yes, on the Memotech HRG this is the "SKETCH" function…
