I am not sure. Depends on the keyboard. If it does work on a normal ZX80 it will work with the ZX80CORE as well.

But the keyboard input in general is different between ZX80 and ZX81. In ZX81 there are open collector outputs of the ULA which allow to attach a second keyboard parallel to the internal keyboard. So a key is detected if it is either on the internal or external keyboard pressed. That concept does not work this way with the ZX80 because there is a busdriver which has to be deactivated when using external keyboard.

We discussed it on the german forum. There had been the possibility to change the circuit in general form that bus driver to open collector technology but we decided against it because it's different to the ZX80. Paul said he would simply pull out IC10 (74LS365) and then the external keyboard can be connected. But then the LOAD signal is not detected (don't know if you plan to use this audio signal).

But we placed a special keyboard connector with signals KBD0-KBD4, A8-A15, Reset, GND and VCC for own adaptions. Or you do your own mod while placing a switch to the enable inputs. You can see this connector on the last pictures directly above the diodes D3-D10. There is not too much space but would be possible to use a ribbon cable soldered in the board or something like that. Depends on your case (maybe no case at all).

But as stated first, if it works in any ZX80 it will work in this ZX80CORE without any modification.

And there is still the possibility to use tactile switches which are quite cheap (about EUR 12,00 for a full set with 40) and you don't need an original keyboard membrane and can print the keyboard layout on paper, laminate it and place it above the tactile switches. There are really quite easy to press and makes fun typing with these switches. Up to you. ;)

Thanks for the explanation, my zx80 knowledge is limited as I only have 1 and don't want to break it :-)

Due to zx80 case design it does not fit!

..in that case you'll need to rig up an extender connector! ;)

In the zx80 the Keyboard latch is Not open collector.
When I use my memo tech keyboard on my ZX80 I pull the latch from its socket and it works fine.
If you want a permanent solution you can exchange the latch against a open collector version with pull-ups soldered on it. :D
Kind regards
Paul
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

So we are now ready for order. Have some last pics for you. ;)

So if somebody want to have the ZX80CORE please send me a PM with the amount of boards, add-ons and any extra whises.
The price of a board is EUR 25.00 (GBP 21.50) and the shipment is EUR 3.50 (GBP 3.00) to every country of the world (UK, US, NZ, Timbuktu).
(even to or better say within germany it is a bit cheaper with EUR 2.50).
If someone wants to have more than one board (2 or 3) I will provide a free shipment.
This is due to calculation of the additional prototype we had and I find it quite fair to charge more per person than per board. ;)

The board requires a EPROM of type 2732, 2764, 27128, 27256, or 27512 or EEPROM of type 28C64 or 28C256. It depends on what you want to have inside the EPROM or EEPROM. Only 16k ROM are available concurrently ($0000-$3FFF). But via the ROM switch (see picture above) you can choose the start page inside the provided EPROM or EEPROM in 4 kByte steps (pages). This way you can have ZX80, ZX81, Forth, Aszmic or whatever inside and can simply change the system via turning the switch into appropriate position. For more details take a look in the manual.

I can ship a 28C64 or 28C256 EEPROM with ZX80, ZX81 image or what you like to have in the bigger as a working startup. The EEPROMs can be (re)programmed fully or partly with a provided software inboard (on running ZX80/ZX81 system). I can not burn EPROMs. This is just a service for all people without programmers, otherwise you can do simply yourself if you have a burner.

The full parts list is available in the manual as well or you take this link which provides a shopping cart of a german distributor.
Maybe it is better you take it as notice only and buy your parts in your local country which will be cheaper.
http://www.reichelt.de/?ACTION=20;AWKID ... ROVID=2084
It's about EUR 30.00 (GBP 25.50) for all needed parts via the german distributor.

The membrane keyboard can be ordered here at sellmyretro.com (GBP 18.00):
http://www.sellmyretro.com/category/Ret ... clair+ZX80

If somebody wants the SMD tactile switches like above in the picture, they are from "Alps SKQGAFE010" and are provided from Farnell as example:
http://de.farnell.com/alps/skqgafe010/s ... dp/2056843
You can use the original membrane keyboard as well on top or some people tried out a self print laminated. Up to you.

Additional you need a power supply with audio jack, 9V= 500mA and maybe audio cables with mono adapters for LOAD and SAVE (if you plan to use this).
You can download the manual from here (http://www.8bit-wiki.de):
http://www.8bit-wiki.de/8bitdb.html?&no ... 35c8a8031b
Or shorter this:
http://www.8bit-wiki.de/index.php?id=3& ... 7ad2d90000

So this is what you can order now via PM (prices on your choice in EUR or GBP):

ZX80CORE main board => EUR 25.00 (GBP 21.50)
3 Stück CLIFF CL1382 => EUR 2.50 (GBP 2.00 for all) (3.5mm jack - exactly original like in the Sinclair ZX80)
ZX8-CCB video module => EUR 5.00 (GBP 4.50) (recommandable because the standard picture quality of the ZX80 is not very good ... but if somebody wants it more original :mrgreen: )
EEPROM 28C64 => EUR 3.50 (GBP 3.00) (8 kByte with ZX80/ZX81 preprogrammed)
EEPROM 28C256 => EUR 7,50 (GBP 6.50) (32 kByte with ZX80/ZX81 preprogrammed)
Shipment EUR 3,50 (GBP 3.00) (no shipment if more than 1 ZX80CORE board)

It would be nice if you order the original 3.5mm jack together with the board as we did preorder 100 pieces for this project to get a good price on it. ;)

I will take the pre-orders first and later I will list the remaining boards at sellmyretro.com. ;)
