Crysis on the ZX81

Post by Crayon21 »

Don't laugh. Would it be possible to make a cut down port of Crysis for the zx81? We've seen 1k chess, Vic 20 Doom and 3D Monster maze so Crysis is not out of the question. Would it be possible, if even for the first level to be done?

I don’t know much about those modern games, but it looks like a fully 3D graphics first person shooter.

I think your main problem would be to recognize what you are shooting at. Since the graphics would be quite dithered.

What is best for the old machines is graphics that move 8 pixels and not the full movie animations like today’s games.

The only game I’ve seen for ZX81 with film in it is Dragon’s Lair, but it’s difficult to recognize the graphics unless you know the original graphics from mind.

Then again the film would not work on a regular ZX81, but only one with ZXpand attached, because so much data needs to be loaded. Remember your 16k will only hold a 1 second animation.

If you are talking about RAM the ZXpand has 32k. If you are talking about loading files you are only limited by the size of your SD card.

So let's say you have 48k and ZXpand+, do you now have 80k or is it just 32k period regardless of which ram pack you use?
(BTW, is that you in the thumbnail? Well dressed)

Nope. The ZXpand has 32k. The memory is located either at location 16k - 48k or at location 8k - 40k depending on how you have configured the ZXpand.

To get more RAM than that, you need a special RAM expansion, that does not use ZXpand's memory location. The only one I know is the Chroma interface, which has DIP-switches that can enable/disable most memory locations.

Otherwise you can use a Memotech 64k, which has 56k memory, but then you would have to remove the ZXpand. Then you have no SD card storage.

(It's me from 2015)
