Here's something I discovered last night. You need to run it in SLOW mode (i.e. with NMI board attached) on a ZX80core with the illumination kit, using the ZX81 ROM image. Oh, and make sure you don't have a printer attached!

Good advice. 
When you have the NMI board you can distinct wether you are in SLOW mode or FAST mode easily which is red for SLOW and green for FAST mode.
And you will get a pretty intense pink when you enter SAVE.
