Noir Shapes - New 16K ZX81 Game

Post by bobs »

The full version of Noir Shapes is now available for download!

http://www.bobs-stuff.co.uk/noirshapes.html

An arrange-the-shapes puzzle game converted from the forthcoming Xbox 360 game "Cool Shapes". Not only do we have the 48 levels of the original, but also an additional 12 levels unique to the ZX81 version.

(There is meant to be support for the ZXPand joystick, but this never seems to go well for me(!), so expect on-going releases to support that)

Duuuuuude, I even managed to pass several levels!! :)
That means the game goes to the disk and will be played on real ZX81! :)

PS: Even though you didn't want my music for it - which is _scandalous_. Hahaha.

I trust you'll be making a donation via my website as you are enjoying the game? (And that will be an acceptable bribe for the infinite-time cheat. ;) )

I didn't really turn down the offer of music - I just don't think of the ZX81 as having music, I'd rather code for the machine as it was originally intended (my only concession being the joystick support since you hassled so much! ). If I did add music I'd want to have a background tune playing throughout the game, along with spot effects for actions, but I don't believe that is possible(?). But I'd rather we worked together on including music than it being hacked-in as an afterthought.

He He... I've thought about the music / spot effects quite often, i believe it could be possible to modify the STC player (since as that's the player I'm most familiar with) so that you could use 1 of the 3 channels for spot effects over-riding anything that was playing on that channel (so the music should be written with minimal usage of that channel).

Anyway i think that perhaps you should have 2 versions one for standard 16K machine no sound, the other for ZXpand (can be sure of having 32K available)...

Just tossing some idea's around

Andy

That's what I originally meant. I also support making stuff for original hardware.
The sound version was thought only as a version for ZXpand users (which is easy because the music is being loaded into the second - higher - 16K).
Anyway, not everybody likes it, and I was only joking after all. :)

As for the joystick, we prefer it because using keyboard can often make a program crash, You know.

Greetz,

If you can sort out the required player code & music then I'll include it - how's that for an offer? It'll have to be audio which I think matches the mood of the game though, none of your thumping house music!

We're trying to get the joystick working, but I seems to be somewhat of an inexact science - it works fine in EO. Sir Morris has details of the points at which the game polls the interface, and we'll see what comes of it. (Unfortunately I really don't have the money free to buy the interface + joystick).

With some help from Sir Morris the ZXpand joystick should now be supported, just download the updated build from my site.
