I seem to get better at it after a few beers. This isn't right, is it? Applying reductio ab absurdum would indicate that I should be unbeatable if I keep drinking. I will have a go, in the name of philosophy.

I just wanted to test them out, it looks like fun.
I was struck by the time difference calculation, it doesn't seem to be adequate?

You may be right, there are several elements affecting the frame counter accuracy, even (in a small percentage) the hardware ceramic resonator.
I never tuned the z88dk timer functions on the zx81 for this reason, but if it's clearly perceived then it's time to check it more carefully
