New Hires Games: Hero, Beamrider, Magic Floor

Post by nocash »

Alongsides with the new no$zx emulator update, here are also some newly released ZX81 games:

H.E.R.O.
http://nocash.emubase.de/hero.htm
This is an old Activsion title, ported from MSX to ZX81.

Beamrider
http://nocash.emubase.de/beamride.htm
Also an old Activsion title, ported from MSX to ZX81.

Magic Floor
http://nocash.emubase.de/magicflr.htm
A small search game for ZX81 and Jupiter ACE (and various other consoles).

Starfight
http://nocash.emubase.de/starfigh.htm
A small shoot-em-up game, ported from CPC to ZX81 (this isn't actually a new, it's been already released some years ago).

Some screenshots of the four hires games (and two unrelated lowres games):

All four games are working in no$zx v2.0 (http://nocash.emubase.de/zx.htm) and on real ZX81 hardware (with hires-compatible RAM expansion). Hero and Beamrider require at lot of RAM (48K and 32K), the other two games are working with 16K.

Wow you've been busy!!!

More for me to try out later :D The 32k games should work unpatched on ZXpand - would you consider adding ZXpand joystick compatibility too :?:

Thanks for releasing these - we've had such an incredible year - it will be difficult for 2013 ro keep up

Can I ask a question? As these machines - MSX, CPC (etc) - are all Z80 based were these titles created by literally converting over the original code to run on the ZX81, by updating the graphics and keyboard routines?

Just had a play on Hero - it took me a while to realise the down key drops a bomb !!

Unfortunately, there are a few places where the screen goes completely blank except for the spiders and the Hero character - when you place a bomb, some of the screen is redrawn, but the majority stays black.

That's the game - there are lanterns that if touched or shot blow and plunge the area into darkness.
