Re: New ZX81 Games

Jonathan, Is there a way to turn off the flashing hints? I know it sounds daft, as this is possibly all especially needed in the game mechanics, but I wanted to start being a bit crap at playing and learn quickly. With the assist of, "Put me here" I couldn't struggle and wonder where.

There's no option to do that as they're always there in the Belgian Slots games that inspired this program. Putting in those hints was by far the most difficult thing to code; before they went in the game was very slow to play and I wanted something pacier. I might consider doing a Chroma version where all the symbols have different colours, that might work without hints. But with all the symbols being the same colour it's very hard to spot matches.

Do you have any real-world examples of these machines? I can't find anything about them and I'm struggling to picture them. I've found references to "3.3" slots which sound like it might tally up, but no images or details.

They're quite difficult to find online but here's an image of one such game. As it happens it's Super Joker, one of many games I coded on Adder 4, 5 and 6 technology over the years. €6 jackpots, the ticket printer prints out your winnings, you then have to take the ticket to the bar. Most games like this have 4 sets but this is unusual in only having 3. Image

Just released: Getaway Driver for the 16K ZX81. A conversion of the classic 16K Spectrum game Run Baby Run. Avoid the police cars and force them to crash into each other. When they have all crashed the last police car starts shooting bullets. Avoid getting shot and make your way to the bottom of the screen to reach the next level. Includes Chroma and Quicksilva character board support.

Really like this, in some ways I think it's better looking than the Speccy one. But there seems to be a nasty bug - I was noodling around in level 1 with two baddies left, doing nothing in particular, when this happened:

The garbage appeared a few characters at a time, gradually working its way down until I got killed because I couldn't see what was happening. The screen then stayed distorted permanently through the Game Over routine and starting a new game :(

I think a 4K ROM ZX80 does not generate a display during program load.

"Loading programs into the ZX80 is trickier than on the ZX81 because the ZX80 does not provide any visual feedback as a program is loading" which is why there is this: http://www.fruitcake.plus.com/Sinclair/ ... Tester.htm
