[HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
Hello everybody!!! I´m new in this forum.
I write because I need some help here.
I have a very old ZX81 game on a tape (Cassette) and I´m trying to pass it to a rom to use it in a ZX81 emulator.
I had pass the tape to a .wav file but I don´t know how to convert the .wav into a rom.
Is there somebody that could advise me about this issue?
I will be eternally grateful.

Re: [HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
Hi DOAs_fan - welcome to the forum!
There are a number of tools you can use to convert the WAV.
The EightyOne emulator can use WAVs as a 'tape' source. File -> Open tape - then select your WAV. You LOAD"" the program then you can save it to the PC in a number of other formats, using the same 'tape' mechanism. Other emulators are almost certainly able to do this also, but I don't have any experience with them.
Another tool is available -here- and has worked very well for me in the past. It can be a little tricky to use but with a reasonable recording you stand a very good chance of success.
If the recording is not so good then sometimes it can help to do some filtering and boosting with a program such as Audacity. This will all depend on the source, so I can't go into specifics here.
Hope this helps.
Charlie

Hi sirmorris!
First than all, thank you very much for your recomendations!!!
Unfortunately I couldn´t convert my tape
Let me show you the results of my attempts...
1) With Java ZX81 Tape Converter:
First I open my .wav file and this messege appears...
http://imageshack.us/a/img87/3065/01analysisresults.jpg
I looks quite promising
Then I try to save the result in a .P file
http://imageshack.us/a/img211/9723/02saveaspfiles.jpg
but this screen of death appears...
http://imageshack.us/a/img594/923/03saveerror.jpg
2) With EightyOne:
First I open my .wav file
http://imageshack.us/a/img713/3605/01openwav.jpg
Then I write the "LOAD" instruction and press Enter
http://imageshack.us/a/img87/7276/02loadinstr.jpg
It´s loading!!!
http://imageshack.us/a/img99/2529/03itisloading.jpg
But It comebacks to the first screen
http://imageshack.us/a/img443/8653/04thefirstscreen.jpg
If is not a problem for you I will accept your help.
Let me know where can I send you the .wav file please.
It´s in mono 88kbps 11kHz .wav format.
Let me know if you need it in another format.

Re: [HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
It's a spectrum program - the 1st block is displaying 'bytes'. Also there is more than one block. You need to ask over at the world of Spectrum. Despite the name of the forum Spectrum is off-topic here
You'll need a different conversion program probably - I don't know anything about those modern machines
Sorry!

Re: [HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
Actually, this thread relates to a game called PROTEUS - see viewtopic.php?f=4&t=971.
Developed for the CZ1000 (a ZX81 clone).
It may well be the quality of the WAV file - could you upload it somewhere so that others could have a look at the WAV file and try converting it maybe ?
You may be able to attach it to a post - depending on the file size.

Re: [HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
Or try one of the free file hosting services or sign up (free) for google drive, ms skydrive, dropbox or some other free cloud storage solution.
If there is sufficient belief that it could be an '81 program then I'll take a listen. If it does turn out to be a zx81 lost program then that would be quite something!

Re: [HELP] How to convert .wav into ZX81 ROM
MY EARS! I should remember to turn down the volume before I listen to these things
As you may have guessed by now I've listened to the recording and unfortunately and it suffers from a varying pitch throughout. It speeds up and slows down quite drastically. This is an effect called 'wow' and it is related to variations in the tension in the tape. Unfortunately I think this tape is very stretched, due to age. Or the tape has stuck to itself - by fast-forwarding and rewinding the tape a few times it may be possible to reduce the amount of wow. Or it might destroy the tape completely I can't say.
I don't think any existing program will read this tape. I wonder if we pool our collective brains we could come up with a forgiving and error tolerant tape converting program? I haven't had much experience with DSP (in fact my maths is quite poor) but maybe someone could help??
