VB-81, no$81, Paul Robson's zx81 emu, xtender i & ii, M.E.S.S, Andy's as-yet-unnamed-nor-released (still with us dude?) and I bet there's more too once you start looking :)

Each have their own good and bad points. Some are gooderer and some are badderer.

There's a couple that I haven't used (vb81, PR's) so I can't speak for them. Out of the rest by far the best is EO. XT2 and no$ do the job but they're creaking a little now.

Yeah i'm still here, have had a few false starts with my other project (more difficult than i first thought) and still working on the tzx interface for my emulator, but once thats done a few other bits tweaked i think i'll give it a beta release and watch the bug reports 'fly' in at an alarming rate !

I am sure there are several and it would probably help to list them all in this forum, with links to relevant web pages:

ZX81 Emulators for Windows
Eighty-One - http://www.chuntey.com/
Xtender - http://www.delhez.demon.nl/
VB81 (written in Visual Basic) - http://freestuff.grok.co.uk/
Timex / Sinclair 1000 Emulator (in Java) - http://www.vavasour.ca/jeff/ts1000/

ZX81 emulators for the ZX Spectrum
ZX81 Emulator - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek ... id=0015646
Paul Farrow's ZX81 module for ResiDOS running on ZX Spectrum with DivIDE Plus (and other expansions): http://www.worldofspectrum.org/residos/ ... .html#zx81

ZX81 emulators for the Sinclair QL
Xtricator - http://www.dilwyn.uk6.net/zx81/index.html

I have not heard of no$81 or M.E.S.S. - do you have links?

Can anyone assign any sort of ranking to these as to whether any are worth trying?

I cannot find a link to Paul Robson's ZX81 emulator or is it the same as the Jupiter Ace one on : http://users.aol.com/autismuk/ace/index.htm

Any more?

I would drop some words about the emulz for PC:

>Eighty-One - http://www.chuntey.com/
----------
The best for real emulation, for ZX81's sound (the only one?), for games and so on.
I would say it has 100% original speed (very useful). That's why it's also the best for testing Your progs before final tests on real hardware.

>VB81 (written in Visual Basic) - http://freestuff.grok.co.uk/
-------------
Good for games but also for coding (it saves P files).
A bit faster then EO.

>Xtender - http://www.delhez.demon.nl/
-------------------
Good for coding as it's damn fast (also saving P files). I noticed that it doesn't show hi-res graphix (at least not everywhere) - just like my ZX81 16K. Interesting.

Greetings.

Fast, does hires, but quite hardcore to use.

m.e.s.s

Not the best.

Never used this one. It's very old though and I wouldn't expect much though this chap is quite some emulator author!

Google brought me to this (old) topic.
In 2008 I wasn't a member of this forum, but I can tell you that I am the one who wrote the ZX81 emulator for the ZX Spectrum.
Beside that emulator I wrote also SAM81 and SAM2ZX81, both a ZX81 emulator for the SAM Coupe, but the second can run most hires games
(but not my 1K  )

ZXSP for Mac. A pretty nice one from Germany that's been around awhile. The author maintains a website with all the versions for old to new Mac platforms.
