Hello and help

Post by jond »

Hello there,
First of all let me say how nice it is to find such an enthusiastic forum devoted to the 80 and 81. I personally own an original '81 in a memotech keyboard and have been using the vb.81 emulator. I love the look of the eightyone 1.0 emulator but am having trouble downloading it. My skills with personal computers are limited! I've clicked on the link to access the zipped file and the source code but when I try to unzip the file I get an error message saying that there is no zx81 rom. Can someone please give me a step by step idiot's guide! Many thanks

Hi Jond. Here's a quick rundown on how to download and run EightyOne...

(I'm assuming you're using Winows XP, other Operating Systems will be similar)

1. Right click on the link below and select "Save as...".
http://www.chuntey.com/eightyone.1.0a.zip

2. When the file selector appears, ensure you're saving to the desktop.

3. You should now have the Eightyone.1.0a.zip file on your desktop.

4. Right click on Eightyone.1.0a.zip on your desktop and select "Extract All" from the menu.

5. When the Extract dialog box appears, click next, then next again, then Finish.

6. A Window will appear. Double click on "EightyOne.exe"

7. You can now delete eightyone.1.0a.zip and move the folder on your desktop to whereever you want.

Thanks for the swift and helpful response, Mike. I really appreciate it. I think my problem lies in that I am using windows vista. Right clicking on the icon on the desktop doesn't yield an 'extract' option. I did a quick web search and this seems a common bugbear for vista users. Thanks for your help anyway!

That's strange.

I'm running Vista Home premium and when I right click on a zip file I get an "Extract All" menu item...

Anyway, another method...

1. Right Click on an empty part of your desktop, and select NEW->Folder from the menu.
2. Now double click on eightyone.1.0a.zip. A window should open showing all the files.
3. Drag a box around all the files (Or press Ctrl-A).
4. Right Click and select Copy (Or press Ctrl-C)
5. Double click on the folder you just created.
6. Right click inside the new window and select Paste (Or press Ctrl-V)
7. Close the Zip Folder window and delete eightyone.1.0a.zip
8. double click on eightyone.exe in the new folder.
