Ian buys a (sort of) Zeddy,... Timex-Sinclair 2068

I was in Ottawa for a funeral a few weeks ago. While I was there I checked out the Kijiji ads, and came home with a Timex-Sinclair 2068. I must have been living under a rock, because I'm ashamed to admit I didn't even know this animal existed.

I finally got a chance to play around with it today. Just had to gush; this puppy is mint. There's some software on the Net for it, but not a lot; I don't think it was very successful in the marketplace. I'll probably never have a cartridge for it. But hey, we like rare birds, right?

There was an adapter cartridge that had a ZX Spectrum ROM, and hence this then allowed a percentage of ZX Spectrum games to run.

There was also, I believe, an edge-connector adapter that allowed some ZX Spectrum interfaces/expansions to be used.

IIRC, both have been recreated in recent years.

I've seen that cartridge on fleaBay, and may spring for one eventually. I do have one working ZX Spectrum 48K, but it's always nice to have "a spare", or at least a way to parallel it. The Spectrum was never very popular over here, so they're somewhat hard to come by.

I had a TS2068 back in the mid 80's. I remember the computer club I went to had a meeting where we assembled the Spectrum rom cartridge. Sadly my power cord plug got damaged and when I rewired it with the polarity reversed by accident. It overloaded the TS2068 and I never did figure out how to get it going. I threw it out after a flood further damaged the PCB.

Welcome to the club. This was the best speccy of its time - My 2nd computer after the TS1000. Cartridge port, better keyboard, joystick ports, more screen resolutions, both RF and composite output, AY sound... They made a couple dumb mistakes making it incompatible with the Speccy, but easy to correct (though that's not needed today anyway). Its key failure in the US was that it was too little too late. There was simply better available and 16bit was just coming on the scene when it came out. I only used mine for a short time before getting Ataris - ST & TT then on to PC and Mac... (now back to zeddys and speccies lol)
