Interface magazine

Post by Trevor_B »

Does anyone remember Interface magazine? I remember being given a couple of copies just after I got my '81 by one of the guys that wrote for it. He lived nearby, and had the unfortunate experience of me turning up on his doorstep one day; we spent half an hour discussing the new machine (the 81), he gave me copies of the previous and current magazine and then I went on my way.

I saw a scan of a single issue on a german website - just wondering if there were any more scanned copies out there, maybe hidden in archives or subdirectories. Anyone have any links?

I also lived close enough to the Timedata crowd in Basildon - I used to get the books direct from the authors.

Those were the days.

Thanks Martin

I'm specifically looking for "interface" - if I remember correctly is was one of the first user group magazines and covered Acorn Aton, ZX80 and latterly zx81. I've no idea how many issues ever got published though there's a volume 2 issue 5 for sale on Ebay for £25 - a bit beyond my budget on this occasion. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133760339864 ... Hi, I have listed the following on eBay and it ends in the next few hours. It does have one bid and I thought I would share this link with you as I saw your posting when I was doing research on these magazines.

Never seen those before, looks interesting, especially as these are so early (1981)
[eBay listing description:] As you can see in the photos the first three magazines are very amateur obviously it was in its infancy at that point, as was the computer it was about!
Looks like it started off as "ZX80 Interface" the "Official newsletter of the ZX80 Users Club", but later dropped the "ZX80" from the title?

Issue 2
In February, Mr. Sinclair unveiled the ZX80. Faster than a speeding Apple, more powerful than a PET, he claimed. Science of Cambridge are believed to be selling more than 1000 of the computers a month, although delivery of the machines is months behind, and delivery of the add-on memory chips is even further behind. Has any anybody actually got the extra K they ordered? Some buyers are disillusioned with their machines. The lack of moving graphics is the biggest complaint.
Yes, it was a very Sinclair-esq launch
Those who bought kits are generally very happy. We've heard several people whose ZX80s worked right from the first turn on.
Amen, that was my experience with the ZX81 kit
The 1K onboard RAM supplied - although Science of Cambridge claim it is equal to three or four of anybody else's RAM because it stores many commands and statements in a single byte - is pretty miserly. But at least it teaches ingenuity in programming
It's amazing what can be done in 1K - see Dr. Beeps games, such as the recent Wordle ZX81!

Still apropos in 2022, we are looking for any excuse to buy the latest device

That jogged a memory for me, back in the day I had a book by Timedata the "Explorer's Guide to the ZX81", which is the book that got me started writing machine code ... google searching ... looks like Timedata began as a book publisher and later got into Spectrum games publishing

The issue on 8bs.com has only a few of the pages of the issue.
INTERFACE
ZX80 ATOM ZX81 BBC

The ZX and Acorn Monthly February 1982, Volume2, Issue 6

Inside this issue
* Adding joysticks to your ZX81
* Floppy disks for the Acorn Atom
* Why the BBC puts its prices up
* The Second ZX Microfair

ZX80, ZX81, Atom, BBC Microcomputer

Only one of the included pages has ZX81 content, namely, an obscure advert for JRS Software. Would love to see more of these magazines
