ZX81 kit build - 33 years late :)

Post by balford »

Saw this over on reddit - someone's taken one of the unsold US ZX81 kits and built it up, taking some pictures along the way :)

Hmm a slightly suspect kit , issue one board with a1983 issue three ULA a year or so after the kits were no longer sold.

Well... true, but the guy that sells the kits states that they're ready to build and usable. He probably felt free to swap out the old ULA (thus avoiding complaints from users who got dark screens) and also swap out any other failed components that would prevent Little Johnny from being able to build and use his Christmas present successfully. But I agree with you, it's not exactly 100% authentic. Hey, but then again - these kits were apparently destined for the South American market or somewhere like that. Perhaps that's where all the kits went after they stopped selling them here, and they really *did* get sent out with the latest ULA?

The datecodes on the CPU and ROM seem to be in the same ballpark though, and since the ROM is Sinclair branded I'd have thought that's unlikely to have been replaced?

If he did swap stuff out he's obviously OCD enough to source period stuff :)

You might be right about the South American export angle though.
