The save signal that comes from the ZX81 is VERY WEAK. I don't know which equipment you are saving to, but some newer equipment might just ignore the signal. I recently got a Hantek DSO5102P from amazon and already used it to help repair a Speccy which wouldn't load from tape and debug a zx81 composite mod.
