Re: Quick-Silva manufacturer...

This article may clear the air: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23311983.2016.1190441 QS certainly made their own hardware. Apparently, QS licensed some games from Indescomp at one point (see the wikipedia article). That may have had something to do w/ Indescomp manufacturing QS hardware.

Re: ZX81 with strange addon board soldered to it

The 4093 is often used to make an oscillator in the synth community. My suspicion is that it's a "beeper": when any key is pressed, it beeps. There were more than a few designs for this in the US.

Re: Hello I took a Timex out of the Library in 1983

Some of Rick Dickinson’s design drawings are available online. They show an interesting progression of the design process. Given that the Microace is an illegal copy, I don’t think it would have had much concious influence. Both the ZX80 and Microace use vacuum formed cases. It’s a reasonably priced...

Re: TS2068 input voltage...

Yes: the 78L12 needs 15 volts to deliver 12. The 12v is mainly for the video chip. Even so, the it’s under sized. Replacing the 78L12 with a 7812 will improve the video a bit.

Re: Pascal for ZX81

That's my read: write the program, compile, then load for execution. I think it's more a system for teaching Pascal than for anything actually useful.
