Re: Hello from Canada

Well a couple weeks ago my 16K module arrived in the mail. Although it was a ZX81 version (for North America) I was able to swap the plastic case from the non functional Timex 16K Ram pack, so it matches the computer.

And now I am happy to party like its 1981!

BBS Emulation

Does anyone know or have experience connecting to a telnet bbs via a ZX Spectrum emulator. I am currently using Fuse but can switch.

I tried to google it but there is surprisingly little information on this topic.

Thanks

Re: Hello from Canada

Any unregulated PSU gives you more voltage than its rated voltage if the load is lower that the nominal load. Make the story shorty, it is uncommon that the ZX81 PSU gives approx. 10.5V when connected to the ZX81. In idle (no load connected) the PSU output voltage can reach 14.5V easily. Bear in mi...

Re: Hello from Canada

Hmm too hot to touch though? It seems to be giving out more then 5V closer to 7 Or measuring wrong - seen often when people (try to) check voltages. For 78xx regulators like the 7805 in the photo, seen from the front (printed) side, pins from left to right are input, GND, output. So you'd put your ...

Re: Hello from Canada

Hi Ogien, Good that you joined us on here. This pointed IC is a voltage regulator and I can be very hot-hot when the juice is taken by any other chips on this board. I would not worry about it as long as it gives a stable +5V on the output. Hmm too hot to touch though? It seems to be giving out mor...

Re: Hello from Canada

Much preferable over a RAM pack: https://web.archive.org/web/20150905141235/http://bitcycle.org/retro/zx81/internal_RAM/ Cheap, fairly easy, no RAM pack wobble, edge connector remains free for other add-ons like sound card, flash card storage etc. The original 16K RAM packs were poorly designed & a...

Re: Hello from Canada

Hello Ogien, welcome to the board. Please don't kill a rampack to get a connector. I can send you a new connector for free if you promise not to kill the rampack. I can also replace it for you. I have a desoldering station. If you need help to repair them just ask, even if I live on the other side ...

Hello from Canada

Hello from Canada, I finally got my ZX81 (Timex 1000) working after some trials. Originally had a broken keyboard (cracked ribbon) and ULA that did not seem to recognize some keys on the left side (123 QWE etc). However after ordering another Timex 1000 and swapping some parts around I have 1 workin...

If there is no short somewhere I would say it is 80% the ULA. Did you try another one ?
Maybe just a weak output or some interdependencies.
Unfortunately I do not have another ULA :(
