That's great, thanks. I'll examine the GMSave side of the tape when I get a bit of free time. With it having multiple names, I wonder whether is was a type-in routine from a magazine that's been customised...

There is an option on the dialog to accept alternate spellings, such as no space in GOTO and GOSUB:

Have you tried swapping the vLA81 for a real ULA in that ZX81? That would prove whether it is the computer itself or the vLA81.

Still worth re-recording it and posting it here as might be possible, and maybe try a different cassette player. It might be better than before and might allow some information to be recovered.
