Replacement Z80

Post by msknight »

I tried searching, but the search terms I was using were rejected as too common!

I wondered about replacement Z80 processors and I came across the one near the bottom of this page...
https://www.retroleum.co.uk/zx81-components

What do I need to watch for if wanting to get a Z80 for the spares box for my zeddies? Is there another place to get them from?

Grateful, as always, for advice.

Personally I get them from here..

Being CMOS they run a bit cooler and use a lot less power, so less strain on the regulator.

Any Z80 or equivalent with a speed rating of 4MHz or greater will work. Either NMOS (as per those that Sinclair used) or the more modern lower power CMOS type (that are still made by Zilog, as used by Moggy).

Oh, you do need it to be in a DIL/DIP package.

RS do also have trade counters if you don't want to pay for P&P/handling charges. Well, assuming you are in a city with a trade counter...

Found this - five of these gives free shipping, whereas RS is a tube of 10 which is more than I'll need...

I get mine from Retroleum. Sure I can get them a little cheaper elsewhere if I buy bulk but I like shops like Retroleum to stay open so I always try and get stuff from there where possible.

I did see Retroleum's listing, but there wasn't enough there, technically, to reassure me it would be a drop in for the ZX81. I should probably have e-mailed and asked.

No technical spec needed,as the Retroleum description says it's a brand new direct CMOS replacement for both speccy and 81 so no worries or over thinking needed I would have thought.

I was probably over thinking when I was thinking things. I speed read probably... didn't see much info and passed.
