@Charlie

I couldn't wait to become Xspandled again so I persuaded Brother in law to let Me flash His Xpand.
Whilst there is no problem with ROM image The firmware doesn't seem to be updating.

Followed instructions on page 12 and all that happens is a logo saying "ZXPAND INTERFACE 1.0" appears not v1+ for example .
Typing CONFIG=V gives same result v1,the upshot being that the SAVE PPP;A thingy doesn't work.
On reset+shift it just crashes the zeddy.
To make self run work I have to use the example shown for version 5.0 with all the added basic at the end of the program.

Go on tell Me I'm thick :( what have I done wrong?

You need to give the interface a hard reset - power cycling it or holding the reset button for a couple of seconds.

With a freshly formatted card, zxpandfw.bin copied to it and a hard reset you should be ready to go...

Have another go and tell me what happens.

Thanks for that info - I'll update the manual. I think a lot of the time I miss things like this because I don't own a card with a capacity large enough to warrant fat 32 - of my 50 or so cards only 1 is > 512mb ;¬)

I should get a bit more modern!

@ Charlie,
What I can't understand is that it reads FAT32 for normal use, but not for firmware update :?:
The cards I use are from My MIDI keyboards and are a mixture of 2-4 gig.

Anyhow as soon as I get My You-know-whats I will have mine updated.

Cracking little update by the way booted straight into Andys/sergeys pt3 player no probs.
I will try and devise something to boot up My Memotech assembler from scratch, I think.

Good stuff Charlie and thanks again.

Well, that matches my experiences. I had to find a small SD-Card in order to update the firmware. I normally use 4-8GB Cards borrowed from my DSLR camera.
But I now have found a 16MB card that was supplied with our very first digicam
Now thats for firmware only... So it seems to be the FAT instead of FAT32. A bug in the library? Most probably a feature to avoid overwriting the firmware by mistake
So next time I will use the terminal program to format the card in the old fashioned way („newfs_msdos -F16 /dev/disk4s1“) on my OSX machines (where disk4s1 ist the sd-card, found with "df")
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

The bootloader has to use a far more naive approach to sd card access. The full FAT library takes ~25k... The bootloader in its entirety is 4k ;-)

It may be possible to fix this though - I'll have a look,
